Mònica Guilera is an artist with more than twenty years of experience in the practice of basketry. Hercontemporary sensibility, rooted in tradition, is reflected in her work, which explores form, colour and pattern, and creates functional and artistic objects. Specialising in the passive fishing net technique 'nasa', Mònica uses a wide variety of locally gathered natural materials, such as willow branches, cane and olive stems, combining rigidity and softness to create contemporary baskets and sculptures.
Guilera has received outstanding recognition in the field of basketry, such asthe Basketmakers' Association's 2016 Basket Award, and first prize in the contemporary category of the Fira Internacional Cistell Competition at the Salt International Basket Fair 2016. She has also participated in exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Guilera has collaborated with artist and basket maker Tim Johnson in the creation of large-scale installations and exhibitions. She also teaches workshops and seminars on basketry throughout Europe.
